From Market to Table: One-Day Home-Style Nepali Cooking and Dining Experience in Kathmandu

Experience Nepal Like a Local—Through Its Kitchen
Nepal is a land of ancient traditions, breathtaking landscapes, and one of Asia’s most underrated cuisines. And there’s no better way to experience the soul of Nepal than through its home kitchens.
Our “From Market to Table” one-day cooking and dining experience in Kathmandu invites travelers to go beyond restaurants—to shop, cook, and eat just like a local. This is more than a food tour; it’s a cultural immersion.
You'll start in the lively alleys of a local market, then head to a Nepali home-style kitchen to cook authentic dishes passed down through generations—and finally, share the meal in traditional Nepali style.
Perfect for: Solo travelers, couples, foodies, families, and cultural enthusiasts.
Part 1: Morning Market Adventure (8:30 AM – 10:00 AM)
Start your experience in one of Kathmandu’s oldest bazaars—Asan or Kirtipur—where locals shop daily for produce, spices, and grains.
What You’ll Do:
- Pick fresh ingredients with your host chef
- Learn about Nepali herbs & Himalayan spices
- Try seasonal fruits or snacks along the way
- Engage with vendors in a truly local setting
Bonus: We provide reusable shopping bags and ingredient checklists.
Part 2: Arrive at Our Traditional Kitchen Studio (10:15 AM – 10:30 AM)
- Styled with clay pots, brass utensils, stone grinders, and low seating
- Hygiene assured, with gloves, aprons, and sanitation facilities provided
- Welcome drink: Local chiya (milk tea) or lemon ginger honey
Part 3: The Cooking Class – Make Authentic Nepali Dishes (10:30 AM – 1:00 PM)
Now comes the best part — hands-on cooking! Under the guidance of our home chefs (often grandmothers and mothers from the community), you’ll learn the real techniques and family secrets behind Nepal’s favorite foods.
You’ll Cook:
- Dal Bhat Tarkari – Nepal’s most iconic meal
- Aloo Tama – Bamboo shoot curry with potatoes
- Seasonal Saag – Sautéed greens with garlic and chili
- Momo (Dumplings) – From dough to chutney
- Tomato Achar – Spicy pickle to finish the plate
You’ll chop, grind, stir, and taste as you go—with cultural insights throughout.
Part 4: Dine Together – Nepali Style Lunch (1:00 PM – 2:30 PM)
Once the cooking is done, it’s time to sit down for a home-style family meal.
Highlights:
- Eat with your hands (or spoon if preferred)
- Sit cross-legged with brass plates for full immersion
- Learn table etiquette and customs (e.g., pouring water, offering seconds)
Optional Add-On: Taste Raksi or Chyang (local alcohol) for an extra cultural touch.
Part 5: Nepali Desserts & Tea Ceremony (2:30 PM – 3:15 PM)
